Knowledgeable gardeners.....I have 2 questions, can you help please?

1. I have a fir tree that is doing really well except the bottom foot where it looks dead....what can I do? Why do you think this has happened?

2. As the daffodils in my garden will soon finish flowering, I don't want to tie them, is it okay to cut them right down?

Appreciate any help you can give me, thanks!

1). Could be allot of reasons why the fir tree is doing that. Take a picture of it and a piece of the dead/dieing part and bring it in to your local cooperative extension. The Master Gardeners there can tell you what is wrong. it is a free service and it is part of their "community service" for getting the Master gardeners title through the Cooperative extension.

2). Daffodil's... Do NOT cut the leaves back until they yellow and die back a bit. The leaves are making energy that the bulb is storing and needs it to re-bloom next year. if you cut the leaves back before they die back on their own you will have no flowers next year.
Reply:pretty good advice t-pot. if the bottom foot of the tree is in bad shape, you probably have some salt damage.. spray from the streets, salt from a sidewalk, pee form some ill-mannered male dog.. if the needles are off the branches, it may be too late to save them.. you may need to trim them off.. sorry. If it's salt, you may want to sprinkle som lawn gypsum around. It helps repair salt damage.

The daffs.. exactly.
