How important is it to cover tulips and daffodils before temperature drops to near freezing temps?

I have tulips which have already bloomed as well as daffodils.

The temperature is getting down to 31 degrees F tommorow night.

How important is it you think?

It is unnecessary. Those are early spring plants that have evolved to survive during an uncertain season. The only damage will be to the foliage . It will turn brown and can be trimmed away after all danger of frost. Any plants in bloom will wilt but those in bud will bloom once the weather warms again. If you decide to cover, use cloth not plastic. plastic conducts the cold.
Reply:It's not important to cover them unless they are in bloom when it's freezing. If they're not blooming at the time, it makes no difference whether you cover them or not. God Bless, Martha S.
Reply:I never cover my spring flowers, they're quite hardy.
Reply:Tulips and daffs do not need protection from frost. They are a very hardy plant and even snow will not harm them.
Reply:I think it is very important, it helps the frost keep off. Making them live, and not freeze to death..
Reply:i never cover mine as they are hardy bulbs,and come back, but if you worried you can put some straw around them to keep them warm,and proteced.

Reply:They don't need protection - I have never covered my daffs or tulips even when it's frosty or when it snows and they always bob back up and look lovely.

Reply:I've had both blooming through several inches of snow. Unless they're in full bloom and the temperature is going to be down into the low 20s or teens, I wouldn't worry about it.



If the blooms are already done, don't worry about it at all.
