Dying Daffodils?

How long after they have died off can I cut them down to ground level?

Dying Daffodils?
take the dead heads off but leave the stalks as this will allow the bulbs to feed so they flower next year.
Reply:Leave them as long as you possibly can so that the goodness goes back in the bulbs but do deadhead them. There's an area near here where they are never cut at all and they are the biggest and strongest daffs you've ever seen.
Reply:You should cut off the stems after they have flowered or the plant will put its enrgy into making a seed head . However, do not ever cut the leaves off. The leaves are taking in the sun and giving the plant the food and energy necessary to make bulbs and to keep the existing bulb healthy. If you cut down the whole plant you may kill the plant.
Reply:Daffodils do not require deadheading. It is important to let the green foliage die back naturally, a process that generally takes about 6 weeks. The longer the foliage lasts, the better the blooms will be the following year. Many gardeners have the urge to "tidy up" bulb plantings after bloom by tying up the leaves with string or rubber bands. The 6-week leaf dieback time is a critical time period for leaves busy with photosynthesis and the leaves must be free to soak up sunshine during this crucial period.
Reply:About eight weeks. This is the amount of time we leave them before cutting them (when they have been naturalised in grass) as grasscutters. This allows them to store enough nutrients to grow embryo flowers for next season. Those that are cut early tend to be "blind" the next season - that is without flowers.
Reply:I've heard that you aren't suppose to...something about how they need the nourishment from the leaves or something, BUT~ I always wack mine off with the weed eatter as soon as I start trimming in the summer, and it hasn't bothered them in 25+ years:) LOL

Good Luck!!
Reply:Cut off the flower stem but leave the leaves untill they turn brown. Then cut and discard the leaf cuttings.
