Can the background of a downloaded image be made transparent?

I downloaded a daffodil jpg off the Net, but the background of it is white. Is there any coding I can put in to make the background transparent?

Reply:I have a share wear software called Animagic. You can make the background of images transparrent.
Reply:jpg doesn't support transparent images but GIF format does, just open it up in an image editing program and erase the background you dont want to show and save it as GIF
